History of Lacrosse

Lacrosse was started by Native American/Indigenous peoples and was originally known as stick ball. The game was initially played in the St. Lawrence Valley area by the Algonquian tribe and they were followed by other tribes in the eastern half of the North America, and around the western Great Lakes.

Native American lacrosse games were seen as major events, which took place over several days. Often played in huge open areas, these contest took place between villages involving hundreds, sometimes thousands of players.

French Jesuit missionaries in the 1630s were the first Europeans to see lacrosse being played by Indigenous peoples. One of those was Jean de Brebeauf, writing about the game being played.

Known as “The creators game” the Iroquois see the game of lacrosse as a gift from the creator. It was to be played for enjoyment and as a medicine game for the healing of the people.

The Black League-Player Development League of Circle City P.R.I.D.E. Sports

The development of youth in the Circle City P.R.I.D.E. Sports (CCPS) Lacrosse League is important to the growth of the game in Indianapolis. Recognizing the importance of creating a fun and engaging learning environment, CCPS Lacrosse League will utilize the Lacrosse Athlete Development Model (LADM) created by US Lacrosse. This model is designed to bring out the full potential of every player. This model keeps more players engaged in the sport longer and allows the best player to emerge as they reach their greatest potential. This league will be open to boys and girls, age 7-13 years old.

The Gold League-Competition and Travel League of Circle City P.R.I.D.E. Sports
